This photograph shows the modernization that has occurred in Shanghai over the last 10 years. It was sent to me by one of the students that I tutor by computer. She, in turn tutors classes of the elderly in how to use the computer.

Talk about togetherness! Here they live in the mountains of Fujian Province - as close as they can be to each other, but with no others in sight.

In one of the Chinese cities that Lisa, Glen and I visited, we saw literally hundred of people all bent over looking at something in a public square, and we couldn't resist joining them to see what was happening.  It was an exhibit of photography, and I liked this photograph of everyone working together so much that I bought it.  I call it "Helping Hands".

During our trip, I worked on learning bits and pieces of Chinese, and this drawing in which the young man is using Pinyin is from one of my books. Pinyin is a romanization of Chinese characters. He thinks he's saying hello to the teacher, but he's mispronouncing the word. The word for teacher is lioshi and he's using lioshu which means mouse.

Everybody is busy reading so it looks like a library, but, on the other hand, it looked like the woman might be trying to sell the book.  "No...No!", my Chinese friend said; you rent the book. So I asked her how long you could sit and read if you rented it, and she didn't know, but she knew that some people rent the books and take them home.  I'll have to do some research on this to try to find out how the system works.

We saw bicycles everywhere we went in China.  They're used all year around, as you'd expect.  This scene was taken in Beijing.
